Description

Salford, Lancashire born outside left George Hicks began his football career with Salford Lads Club in 1919, playing for Clayton in 1920, and Droylesden in 1921, from where he joined First Division Manchester City in November 1923, making his Football League debut the following February against Nottingham Forest and scoring his first goal three days later against Burnley. He played for City for the next five years which included an appearance in their 1926 FA Cup Final defeat to Bolton Wanderers in the same season as they were relegated.

The 1926-27 season was his most successful at City, he was an ever present and scored 22 goals as they finished third in the Second Division, scoring a hat-trick in a 4-2 win at Clapton Orient in March 1927, finishing only behind Tommy Johnson who was the club’s leading goalscorer with 25 goals, and he was also a mainstay of the City team which won the Second Division Championship the following season when he scored 11 goals in the campaign. But in October 1928 he signed for Birmingham City after 48 goals in 135 games for The Citizens.

He had two good seasons at St Andrews but in 1930 suffered a bad knee injury, and only played once more before being transferred to Manchester United in January 1932 after 18 goals in 81 games for The Blues, and then moving on to Bristol Rovers a year later, without ever playing a game for either club. In August 1933 he joined Swindon Town and played 4 games for them before moving to Rotherham United in October, playing 33 times and scoring 9 goals before retirement at the end of the 1933-34 season.
