Halesowen, Worcestershire born centre half Tom Higgins began his football career with junior clubs Hasbury Welfare and Woodfield, playing for Albion Swifts, joining them in August 1888 before moving to play for Stourbridge in 1893. From there he joined First Division West Bromwich Albion in May 1894, making his Football League debut at Aston Villa in October 1894. Later that season, in April 1895, he was part of West Bromwich Albion’s FA Cup Final team which lost, also to Aston Villa, 1-0 at The Crystal Palace.
He was ever present in the 1895-96 season and won representative honours when he played for The Football League against The Scottish League at Goodison Park in April 1896, which ended in a 5-1 victory for the English Leaguers. He won a further representative cap that November as The Football League won 2-0 against The Irish League at The Oval, Belfast. However an injury in November 1897 finished his professional playing career after 5 goals in 94 appearances for The Baggies, forcing his retirement in September 1898.
His elder brother Billy Higgins played for Grimsby Town, Bristol City, Newcastle United and Newton Heath (now Manchester United) between 1892 and 1912.
NB the photograph was taken ahead of his appearance for The Football League at Goodison Park in April 1896.
