Description

Chorley, Lancashire inside forward (he played in all three positions) Norman Higham began his football career with hometown Lancashire Combination club Chorley from where he signed for First Division club Bolton Wanderers in May 1930, spending two seasons at Burnden Park without breaking through into The Trotters’ first eleven. He returned to Chorley in 1932 from where he signed for First Division club Everton a year later, making his Football League debut against Manchester City in February 1934.

He kept his place in The Toffees’ first team to the end of the season but only played once more in a defeat at Leeds United that October before a transfer to Middlesbrough in March 1936 after 6 goals in 14 appearances for Everton. A regular during their 1936-37 campaign, he was then a more occasional performer in the final two peacetime seasons before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939.

After 10 goals in 50 matches for Middlesbrough, Higham signed for Second Division club Southampton for £1,000 in the 1939 close season, and played twice, scoring in both their August matches before the outbreak of War. During the War he played a dozen wartime matches for The Saints but by the time peacetime football resumed, he had retired from senior football and played again for Chorley before his retirement from the game.
