Ashington, Northumberland born right half John Hindmarsh played for Ashington Welfare in 1930 and Ashington in 1931, before being on the books at Sheffield Wednesday in 1934-35 without making an appearance for their first eleven. He then joined Second Division Burnley and made his Football League debut at Bradford City in September 1935, scoring once in 34 appearances that season. However he fell out of favour and only appeared in 7 more matches in 1936-37 before joining Notts County in the 1937 close season. He had two seasons at Meadow Lane, making 65 appearances, and was a near ever present in the final peacetime season of 1938-39, before re-joining non league Ashington in the summer of 1939, after which the outbreak of the Second World War effectively ended his football career.
