Description

Sheffield born left back Walter Holbem played junior football with Heeley Friends in 1905 before joining Sheffield Wednesday for £10 in 1906, making his Football League debut at Preston North End in January 1907. He made 89 appearances for The Owls over his five seasons at Hillsborough, before joining Everton in the summer of 1911 for £500, but he struggled to get into the Everton team, 11 of his 18 appearances coming as they were League Championship runners up in 1911-12.

He joined Scottish League club St Mirren in July 1913 but soon returned to England after 14 appearances for The Buddies, joining Preston North End that December, and he made 41 appearances for the Deepdale club through to the suspension of peacetime football at the end of 1914-15 due to the onset of the First World War. After the War he joined Central League club Southport Central (for whom he had played wartime football) in 1919 before retiring prior to their elevation to League status in 1921.
