Description

Middleton, Lancashire born full back (he played both sides) Dick Holden started playing football at Parkfield Central as a forward in 1902. He then joined Tonge in 1903, where he started playing as a full back. In May 1904, Holden joined Second Division club Manchester United, and spent most of his first season at United in the Reserves before making his Football League debut against Blackpool in April 1905. In the 1905-06 season an injury to Bob Bonthron allowed Holden to play for the first team and he played 31 matches over the campaign as United won promotion to the First Division, finishing as Second Division runners up.

Two seasons later he played 29 matches as they won the 1907-08 League Championship, however in February 1908 he suffered a knee injury, and over the next four and a half years he was restricted to only 25 appearances. After 117 appearances for the club and no goals, he left United in May 1914 and joined The Royal Air Force, serving in the First World War that began three months later. When the War ended in November 1918, Holden did not resume his career as a footballer.
