High Moor born left winger Sam Hopkinson began his football career in junior football with Valley Road Juniors in 1919 and played for Shirebrook from 1920 before joining Chesterfield, for whom he made his Football League debut at Rochdale in October 1924. He soon became a regular in a competitive Chesterfield side, playing three seasons at Saltergate, scoring 19 goals in 82 appearances, before returning to Shirebrook in 1927.
After a spell with Ashton National in 1929 he returned to Football League action when he was signed by First Division Manchester United in January 1931, but he couldn’t help them avoid relegation at the season end. Increasingly a fringe player at Old Trafford, in 1934 he switched to play mainly at left half, but after failing to make any first team appearances in 1934-35, he joined Tranmere Rovers in the 1935 close season after 12 goals in 53 appearances for United, but made just 10 appearances for Rovers, all at left half, before finishing his professional career in 1936.
