Description

Greenfield, Flintshire born right back Billy Hough played for Connah’s Quay & Shotton in 1928 and Holywell Arcadians in 1929, before joining New Brighton in 1930, for whom he made his Football League debut against Chesterfield in November 1930, scoring once in 5 appearances during November and early December, when he was signed by Preston North End. His goal against Southport would prove his only career goal. He struggled to establish himself at Preston North End  as he suffered a series of injuries and didn’t see much playing time until his transfer to Blackburn in December 1936 after 71 appearances for the Deepdale club, never playing more than 21 games in a season. However in 1933-34 he made 19 League appearances as Preston finished runners up in the Second Division to seal promotion.

He subsequently helped Blackburn get promoted to the First Division in the 1938-39 season, playing 31 times in the League as they won the Second Division Championship, but his career was effectively finished by the Second World War after 59 appearances. He played in the Blackburn side that faced West Ham United in the 1940 Football League War Cup Final, although he ended up with a runner’s up medal.
