Wallsend, Northumberland born left back Jack Houghton began his football career with Wallsend Park Villa in 1907, playing for Wallsend Elm Villa in 1908 and Wallsend Park Villa again in 1909 before being signed by Second Division Hull City in May 1910, for whom he made his Football League debut against Barnsley that November.
Never a regular at Anlaby Road, where he also figured at centre half and right back, and scored three goals in 28 appearances during his three seasons with The Tigers, he joined Fulham in May 1913, where he was a regular in the last two seasons before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football, being ever present in the 1913-14 season.
However after the War he spent two seasons on the fringe, making only 6 further appearances, and he joined non league Newburn in the 1921 close season after 64 appearances for The Cottagers, where he subsequently played until his retirement.
