Description

Balfron, Stirlingshire born left back James Hunter was briefly on Newcastle United’s books in 1919 but his senior football career with Scottish League Motherwell the same year, for whom he made 3 appearances in 1919-20 before joining Falkirk in the 1920 close season. His progress for The Bairns led him to win representative honours, when he twice played for The Scottish League, making his debut in a 2-1 defeat to The Football League at St James’ Park, Newcastle in February 1923 and playing as The Scottish League beat The Irish League at Windsor Park, Belfast the same October.

First Division club Newcastle United then re-signed Hunter for £3,500 in January 1924, his Football League debut coming the same month against Tottenham Hotspur, but he was a fringe player during his time at St James’ Park, making only 12 appearances. After a trial with Heart of Midlothian in 1925 he followed many professional footballers to the nascent American Soccer League and played later the same year for New Bedford Whalers.
