Coatbridge, Lanarkshire born goalkeeper John Hunter had a war interrupted football career. His early career is unknown but he signed for First Division club Kilmarnock in 1937, making his Scottish League debut at Rangers in November that year, playing 15 League matches before the end of the season, but also featuring in 6 Scottish Cup ties including both the 1938 Final and replay, when, after a 1-1 draw in the first match, Kilmarnock were beaten 4-2 by East Fife after extra time.
Hunter was then an ever present in Kilmarnock’s 1938-39 campaign as they finished tenth in the First Division, before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 severely disrupted his career. During the War he served in the The Royal Navy, and played 17 wartime matches for Celtic in 1941. After the War he returned to Rugby Park but only played in 2 matches during their first peacetime season, although he again won the gloves in 1947-48, playing 25 matches. But he lost his place in early April 1948, and after 88 appearances for Killie he signed for Stenhousemuir in the 1948 close season. He played a single season for The Warriors before retiring in 1949.
