Sheffield born inside right Jimmy Hutchinson began his football career with Aqueduct in Sheffield and joined Sheffield United in November 1937, but never made the first team before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939, during which he guested for Bradford City, the Royal Navy, Lincoln City, Hull City and Port Vale. Hutchinson made his debut for The Blades, and only senior peacetime appearance, in an FA Cup tie at Stoke City in January 1946, but in June that year he transferred to Harry Kinghorn’s Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, where he made his Football League debut at Notts County that August.
After only four months on the south coast, and 3 goals in 8 matches for The Cherries, he transferred to Lincoln City that November, and scored 32 League goals as Bill Anderson’s “Imps” won the 1947-48 Third Division (North) Championship by a one-point margin over Rotherham United, his total including hat-tricks on the run in in wins over Carlisle United and Hartlepools United. At the time it was said if him he “has a grand shot in either foot, and this allied to his speed makes him a menace to the best of defences”.
He also managed a Second Division hat-trick in a defeat to Bradford Park Avenue the following December but lost his place in January and was transferred to Oldham Athletic in March 1949 after 58 goals in 91 appearances for The Imps. But he struggled to get into the first team at Boundary Park and scored just 3 goals in 14 matches for The Latics before joining non league Denaby United in 1950.
