Description

South Shields, County Durham born centre half Joe Inskip began his football career with Cleadon Park Nomads in 1927 and played for South Shields St Andrew’s from 1929 before joining First Division Sunderland in August 1931, spending two seasons at Roker Park without making their first eleven. He joined Third Division (North) Gateshead on a free transfer in August 1933, and made his Football League debut against Rochdale that September, although in his debut season he only made 11 appearances.

Described as “one of the cleverest centre backs in the Northern Section”, he established himself in the first team from February 1935, and in 1935-36 missed only three matches during the campaign. He scored a career best 7 goals, 3 of these penalties, in their 1937-38 campaign as Gateshead finished a creditable fifth in the division, and he continued to play for the club until the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 effectively ended his playing career, after 12 goals in 176 appearances over six seasons at the club.
