Thornliebank, Renfrewshire born right back Tom Jackson began his football career with Thornliebank, and signed for Scottish League club St Mirren in 1896. Over the next thirteen years Jackson was a fixture on the St Mirren team sheet, scoring 4 goals in 240 appearances before joining St Johnstone in August 1909.
Jackson first won representative honours when he played for The Scottish League in a 3-0 win over The Irish League at Dens Park, Dundee in February 1902, and won the first of his six caps for Scotland when he played in a 1-1 draw against Wales, also at Dens Park, in March 1904. Jackson was to become the most capped player in Saints’ history during his career at St Mirren, a record he would hold for 80 years, winning his final cap against Ireland at Celtic Park in March 1907. Jackson captained Scotland in their international with Wales at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham in March 1905 and he remains the only St.Mirren player to have had the honour of captaining his country. He also played twice more for The Scottish League in April 1904 and March 1905, both matches ending in defeats to The Football League.
Jackson finished his career with a spell at Bathgate, retiring in 1911, but three years thereafter the First World War broke out, and Jackson enlisted with the 11th Battalion of The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action on the Western Front in October 1916, one month short of his 38th birthday.Â
