Description

Hepscott, Northumberland born left back Hughie Jacobson played for Newbiggin Athletic in 1923 and Blyth Spartans in 1924 before signing for Grimsby Town for £20 in May 1925, making his Football League debut against Doncaster Rovers that August. In his first season he made 34 League appearances as Grimsby won the Third Division (North) Championship, and was then an ever present in 1928-29 as Grimsby won promotion to the First Division as runners up in the Second Division.

Although they were relegated in 1932, Jacobson was again an ever present as Grimsby won the Second Division Championship in 1933-34, being one of the few members of all three of The Mariners’ promotion teams. He played one more season back in the First Division before joining Doncaster Rovers in 1935 after a single goal in 382 appearances for Grimsby Town, his consistency at Blundell Park being a feature of his decade at the club. He had two seasons at Belle Vue, retiring after they were relegated from the Second Division in 1937 after 45 appearances, retiring in the close season.

After the Second World War Jacobson returned to Grimsby Town as assistant trainer in 1946, a position he held for a number of years thereafter.
