Description

Bootle, Lancashire born centre half Norman James played junior football for Bootle St James in 1927 and Braby’s Athletic in 1928 before joining First Division club Liverpool in April 1929, making his Football League debut against Blackpool in February 1931. Tom Bradshaw was the regular centre half at the time and when he missed seven of the 42 First Division fixtures in 1930-31, James covered for him on all seven occasions. James wasn’t selected at all during 1931-32 as Bradshaw was an ever present that season and made just one more appearance when Sunderland visited Anfield on 3rd December 1932.

He joined Bradford City in the 1933 close season but was limited to 4 appearances in three seasons for The Bantams, before a move to London to join Queen’s Park Rangers in the summer of 1936. After making only 6 appearances in his debut season he spent the next two seasons as their first choice centre half, scoring once, his only senior goal, against Bournemouth in September 1938, in 76 appearances before the outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 effectively put an end to his career.
