Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire born right back John Johnman began his football career with Carlukr Rovers and signed for Motherwell in 1923 where he established himself as a first team regular for several seasons in the 1920’s and early 1930’s and was part of Motherwell’s 1931 Scottish Cup team that reached the Final only to lose in a replay to Celtic, losing 4-2 at Hampden Park in front of nearly 100,000 spectators after a 2-2 draw in front of 105,000 in the first Final, also at Hampden.
In 1932 he moved south to join Third Division (North) club Stockport County after a single goal in 249 matches for The Steelmen, but struggled to get into their first eleven, his Football League debut and only appearance for The Hatters coming against Gateshead in April 1933, and he moved on in the close season to Halifax Town, where he was a regular in The Shaymen’s 1933-34 campaign, making 41 appearances. He returned to Scotland in the summer of 1934, joining Dunfermline Athletic where he made 70 appearances for The Pars over the following two seasons before his release by Dunfermline, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
