Atherstone, Warwickshire born left winger Arthur Johnson began his football career with hometown club Atherstone Town from where he was signed by First Division Huddersfield Town in November 1924, however he failed to make the first team at Leeds Road and moved to join nearby Second Division club Barnsley in the 1925 close season. He made his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday at the end of October and such were his performances that he was signed by First Division Birmingham after 4 goals in 24 appearances for The Tykes.
Very much on the fringes during his time at St Andrews, he enjoyed a run in the first team between September and November 1927, making 9 appearances in the top flight, before a move to Bristol City in the summer of 1928. He spent three seasons at Ashton Gate, scoring 7 goals in 62 appearances, before returning to the Midlands to join Coventry City in 1931. However he scored once in only 5 appearances for The Sky Blues before ending his career in 1932.
NB although the image was published while Johnson was at Barnsley, he clearly wears a striped Huddersfield Town jersey.
