Ecclesfield, Sheffield born right half Harry Johnson started his football career with Atlas and Norfolk Works, and played for Ecclesfield Church in 1894 before joining First Division Sheffield United in 1895, making his Football League debut against Preston North End in October 1897. That season he scored twice in 10 appearances as The Blades won the League Championship, and he also played in two draws with The Corinthians in the Sheriff of London Charity Shield in March and April 1898.
He was then a member of the United teams that reached three FA Cup Finals in four years between 1899 and 1902, winning two of them, with his first Final coming when The Blades beating Derby County 4-1 at The Crystal Palace in 1899. He was a member of their side that lost to Tottenham Hotspur in a replay in 1901, and that beat Southampton, also in a replay in 1902. He also was part of The Blades’ team that finished League runners up in 1900. He continued to be a first team regular until 1905, whereafter his appearances became increasingly occasional due to injury, and he played his last game of 275, having scored 7 goals, against Arsenal at Bramall Lane in October 1908 before retiring in 1909.
He was first called up for England for the Home Championship, making his international debut in a 2-0 win against Ireland at Lansdowne Road, Dublin on 17th March 1900, winning two further caps over the next month. He was recalled in 1903 and again played in all three of the Home Championship matches, finishing his England career with a match against Scotland at Bramall Lane, which England lost 2-1. He also represented The Football League once, playing in a 3-0 win over The Scottish League at Celtic Park in March 1903.
After injury forced his retirement in 1909, he joined the coaching staff at Sheffield United as assistant trainer, and remained on the Bramall Lane staff until the mid-1930’s.
His son Harry Johnson holds the all time Sheffield United scoring record. His other son, Tom Johnson, also played for Sheffield United.
