Description

Bedminster, Bristol born inside left Jack Johnson began his football career after the First World War with Fry’s in 1919 and played for Bedminster Down Sports in 1920 before joining Third Division (South) Swindon Town in December 1921, making his Football League debut against Luton Town on Boxing Day, and scoring a hat-trick before the season end in a 6-1 win over Norwich City. In 1922-23 he scored 20 goals for The Robins, including a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw at Aberdare Athletic in March 1923, finishing as the club’s leadiug goalscorer.

He remained Swindon’s leading goalscorer in each of the next two seasons with 15 and 18 goals respectively in each campaign, including a hat-trick in the opening day of the 1923-24 season, scoring all three goals in a win over Bournemouth. But (probably due to injury) he lost his place in the side in February 1926, and played only once more at the end of the season and once more in total the following season, in a defeat at Millwall in February 1927. He joined Queen’s Park Rangers in May 1927 after 68 goals in 162 appearances for Swindon Town, and had two seasons at Loftus Road, scoring 8 goals in 19 matches before his retirement from the professional game. He later played for Swindon Corporation Social Club in the mid 1930’s.
