Description

Windy Nook, County Durham born inside left Martin Johnson began his football career with Felling Colliery in 1924 and after a trial with Sunderland he joined Third Division (North) club Durham City in August 1925, making his Football League debut at Accrington Stanley the following month. He clearly impressed in a match at Bradford Park Avenue at the end of January 1926 and they signed him the next month after 3 goals in 13 matches for The Citizens, helping The Avenue to finish runners-up in the division by the end of the season, and then in third place in 1926-27 when Johnson impressed enough for First Division club Sheffield United to sign him in June 1927.

He had a single season at Bramall Lane, making 6 top flight appearances that autumn, but was released at the end of the season and rejoined (by now non league) Durham City in 1928, from where he was signed by Second Division club Wolverhampton Wanderers in October 1928, scoring twice in 8 matches for Wolves before the season’s end. He returned to non league football in 1930, initially with Spennymoor United, and played for Murton Colliery Welfare later the same year. He moved to North Shields in 1933, playing for Wardley Colliery Welfare the same year. He later played for Pelaw in 1934 and Blyth Spartans in 1935 before his eventual retirement.
