Stamford, Lincolnshire born full back (he played both sides) Joe Johnson began his football career with Stamford Town and played for Mansfield Mechanics in 1914, before his career was interrupted by the First World War, after which he joined First Division club Notts County in the summer of 1919, making his Football League debut against Burnley that August. He played 10 matches for The Magpies but he was released following their relegation in 1920, joining newly elected Third Division (South) club Watford in the 1920 close season.
Johnson had four seasons at Watford and scored once, in a 2-2 draw with Queen’s Park Rangers in December 1921, in 102 appearances before joining local rivals Luton Town in the summer of 1924. However after 10 matches for The Hatters from the start of the season he lost his place in October, and played just once more for Luton the following January in a home defeat to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, which proved his final match as a professional footballer before his eventual retirement.
