Description

Coldstream, Berwickshire born winger and later left back Bob Johnstone began his football career with Coldstream from where he was signed by Scottish League club Heart of Midlothian in April 1929, making his Scottish League debut at Celtic in August that year. Over six seasons at Tynecastle he scored 38 goals in 195 matches for The Jambos, before being sold to Second Division club Bradford Park Avenue in June 1935.

Initially playing on the wing, he made his Football League debut at Southampton in September 1935 but lost his place in November, and returned to the team at full back at full back the following year, playing both sides, missing only 3 matches the next season and featuring regularly until August 1939, when his career was effectively ended by the outbreak of the Second World War, by when he had scored once in 125 matches for The Avenue. He did appear once more for Hearts in wartime league football in May 1943 but this was his last known involvement with football and he didn’t play again after the war’s conclusion.
