Dundee born right half John “Jock” Johnstone started his senior career after the First World War with Dundee Hibernian (soon to become Dundee United) in 1919, before joining neighbours Dundee in 1920. He made his debut for The Dees in a win at St Mirren in September 1920 but failed to establish a regular place, scoring twice in 11 matches for The Darn Blues. Nonetheless he was then signed by First Division club Aston Villa in March 1922, making his Football League debut in the derby against Birmingham the same month, but he again struggled to establish himself as a regular first teamer at Villa Park.
He played two games in the earlier rounds of their 1924 FA Cup run that saw Villa beaten in the Final, but from December 1924 he was a first team regular, playing 38 matches during their 1925-26 campaign before losing his place in 1927. He joined Reading in 1928 after a single goal, scored in a 2-0 win over Leicester City at Villa Park in his penultimate match, in 115 appearances for The Villains, but he made only 6 appearances for The Royals in the late summer of 1928 before finishing his professional career.
