The definition of a club stalwart, Chester born right back Alfred Jones began his football career with Chester after the First World War and played junior football for Brickfields Athletic in 1921 and Saltney Athletic in 1922 from where he was signed by Third Division (North) club Wrexham in 1923, making his Football League debut against Ashington that August, when he was an ever present in Wrexham’s line up in his debut season. It was a portent of the future.
Five times more an ever present and five times absent in less than three matches during a season, Jones enjoyed 13 seasons as a Wrexham fixture, eventually losing his place in December playing his final match for The Dragons in April 1936, by when he had scored 5 goals in 540 matches, although his appearances club record was subsequently overhauled by Arfon Griffiths in the 1970’s. Jones joined Cheshire League club Winsford United in the 1936 close season, his last club before his eventual retirement.
He was a cousin of Everton and England forward Dixie Dean.
