Description

Initially a centre half, Shirebrook, Derbyshire born Dennis Jones played junior football for hometown club  Shirebrook from 1913 but his career was interrupted by the First World War. He eventually joined Second Division Leicester City in June 1921, already aged 27, where he was switched to right half, making his Football League debut against Barnsley the same November.

After three seasons at Filbert Street, Jones moved to the south coast to join Southampton in May 1924 after 2 goals in 67 appearances for The Foxes, moving for £200 along with winger Fred Price as part of an exchange deal that saw full back Harry Hooper move in the opposite direction. At The Dell, Jones found it hard to break into the first-team with Bert Shelley, Alec Campbell and George Harkus all well-established as the three half backs. Jones replaced Campbell for four matches in September 1924, but made only three further appearances before returning to the Midlands at the end of the season.

Jones joined Midland League Mansfield Town in June 1925 where he spent a season scoring once in 37 appearances as The Stags finished runners up in The Midland League, before dropping down to non league football with spells at Shirebrook in 1926, joining Sutton Town in August 1927 and Wombwell in August 1928, before his retirement in 1931. He later became a scout for Leicester City and Mansfield Town. After the Second World War, Jones was a trainer at Mansfield Town remaining with the club until around 1953.
