Description

Birkenhead, Cheshire born inside right Gordon Jones had a varied football career which started with local junior club Bebington St Andrew’s in 1906, and he also played for Melrose and Birkenhead before signing for First Division club Bolton Wanderers in 1909, making his Football League debut on New Year’s Day 1910, when he scored twice in a home defeat to Notts County in a season that would end in relegation for The Trotters despite 4 more Jones goals before the season end. He was however very much a fringe player in two further seasons at Burnden Park, and by the time he joined Tottenham Hotspur in the 1912 close season he had scored 6 goals in 23 matches for Bolton Wanderers.

He played 7 matches for Tottenham in the autumn of 1912 but failed to make an impression and transferred to Cheshire League club Hurst at the end of the season, playing for Chester in 1913 and South Liverpool in 1914 before the onset of the First World War forced the suspension of peacetime football in 1915. After the cessation of hostilities he re-joined Chester and had a spell at Crichton’s Athletic in 1921, from where he returned albeit briefly to Football League action with Wrexham in their first season as a Football League club, scoring in his only match in a win over Nelson in November 1921 before returning to non league football with Connah’s Quay & Shotton in 1924 and Flint Town in 1925 before his eventual retirement.
