Description

Rhosymedre, Wrexham born centre half Joey Jones was with Wrexham in 1908 and also played for Treharris before joining Birmingham & District League Stoke in August 1911, who had lost their Football League status in 1908. He became club captain playing 130 games for Stoke in peacetime and another 133 during the War years, he was described as a solid, uncompromising, yet bustling-type of a defender with a fantastic heading ability who had a great enthusiasm for the game. When Stoke re-joined the Second Division in 1919-20 Jones made his Football League debut in their opening game against Barnsley in August 1919, and the following year he won the first of 15 Welsh international caps awarded to him between February 1912, when he made his debut against Scotland and his final cap against Ireland in April 1922.

He joined Crystal Palace in the summer of 1920 and in his first season they won the inaugural Third Division (South) Championship. After a further season in the Second Division he joined Coventry City in July 1922 after 6 goals in 66 games for Palace. His 2 seasons at Coventry saw him score once in 53 games before he joined Crewe Alexandra in 1924, scoring once in 16 appearances for The Alex before joining non league Wellington St George’s in 1925. He later returned to Crystal Palace as trainer under manager Alex Maley in 1926-27.
