Sheffield born left half Albert Kay began his football career with local junior club Tinsley and after the First World War he spent fifteen months on the books at Birmingham between June 1919 and November 1920 without playing for their first eleven. He then joined non league Willenhall before signing for Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 1921 close season, making his Football League debut on 2nd September 1922 in a 1-1 draw at Derby County.

Although Wolves were relegated in his first season, they made an immediate return as Division Three (North) Champions in 1924 with Kay missing only four matches. He continued to play for Wolves throughout the 1920’s under Major Frank Buckley and was still a core part of their team when the won the Second Division Championship in 1932, however he was injured in March 1932 and he was subsequently forced to retire after 2 goals in 295 appearances in old gold and black, without getting the chance to play for them at the highest level.
