Ramsbottom, Lancashire born inside left Tom Kay started his football career on Blackburn Rovers’ books in 1902-03 but didn’t make their first eleven, joining Nelson in 1903. From there he joined First Division Bury in 1904, making his Football League debut against Newcastle United in March 1905, becoming an established member of the first team from March 1906. He scored his only hat-trick against Liverpool in March 1908 in a season when he scored 16 goals, second in the club’s scoring roster behind Billy Hibbert. He continued to play for Bury until the end of the 1913-14 season, playing his last match in April 1914 at Wolves, by when he had scored 77 goals in 231 matches for The Shakers across ten seasons.
