Description

Nuneaton, Warwickshire born right back (often employed at left back) John Kearns began his football career with Brownhills Albion in 1898 and signed for Southern League club Coventry City in 1903, from where he joined First Division club Birmingham in 1906, his Football League debut coming against Blackburn Rovers in April 1906. Initially not a regular for Birmingham, he scored in his fourth match against Notts County that October, and by the time he was signed by Aston Villa in February 1909 after Birmingham’s relegation the previous season, he had played 64 times for The Blues.

Never a regular at Aston Villa, he played 10 matches as they won the League Championship in 1910 and 15 as they finished runners up defending their title in 1911, and by the time he joined Bristol City in the 1912 close season he had played 40 times for The Villains. At Bristol City he missed only 3 matches in his first two seasons but his career was effectively ended by the onset of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football, by when Kearns had scored once in 96 matches for The Robins.
