Description

Newcastle born inside forward William Kelly started his football career with north east junior clubs Benwell Adelaide in 1907, Newcastle Balmoral and Blaydon in 1908, and Northern Alliance club North Shields Athletic in 1909 before joining Southern League club Watford in August 1910, making his debut at Northampton Town the following month. A single season at Cassio Road saw 8 goals in 31 appearances, before he returned to his hometown to sign for First Division club Newcastle United for a £200 transfer fee in May 1911.

He made his Football League debut in Newcastle’s opening match of the 1911-12 season, a 2-0 win at Bolton Wanderers in early September, however he didn’t stay long at St James’ Park, and after 6 appearances he was signed by Manchester City for £400 in November 1911, where he went straight into the side but struggled to make an impact, losing his place after three successive defeats and thereafter appearing only sporadically through to his final appearances in a victory over Sheffield United in February 1913. Having played only 10 times for The Citizens, he returned to the north east to play for Northern Alliance club Blyth Spartans in August 1913 before joining Lancashire Combination club Rochdale in 1914, but his career was effectively ended by the onset of the First World War.
