Platts Common, Yorkshire born centre forward Sam Kennedy began his football career with Wombwell after the end of the First World War, from where he joined First Division Huddersfield Town in August 1920, spending a season at Leeds Road without making a first team appearance before a move to Burnley in May 1921, where he also didn’t make the step up to the first eleven. He returned to Midland League football later the same year with Denaby United and played for Wombwell again in 1922, from where he was signed by Second Division club Nelson in February 1924, making his Football League debut against South Shields, appearing in 6 matches as Nelson suffered relegation.
He joined Fulham in October 1924 and scored his first senior goal in a match at South Shields in October 1925, returning to Yorkshire in October 1926 to join Barnsley after 6 matches for The Cottagers. At Barnsley he scored a hat-trick win a 4-4 draw with Notts County at the end of the same month but lost his place in December after 9 matches for The Tykes, joining Mexborough Athletic before the year end. In 1928 he joined Shirebrook and a year later moved to Scunthorpe & Lindsey United, appearing for Brigg Town in 1930 and Broughton Rangers in 1931, his last known club before his eventual retirement.
