Maybole, Ayrshire born centre half David Kenny began his career playing junior football with Maybole in 1909, originally as a forward, and played for Girvan in 1910 before joining Scottish League Falkirk in 1911. He didn’t stay long at Brockville Park before heading south to join Barrow in 1912, and it was at Barrow that he made his debut in senior English football, playing in an FA Cup tie at Bradford Park Avenue in January 1913, which Barrow drew 1-1. He was signed by Second Division Grimsby Town later in 1913, his Football League debut coming that September against Notts County. It was during 1913-14 that he converted to the half back line, and he played for Grimsby both sides of the First World War, during which he served in the Armed Forces. He had played 31 times for Grimsby in 1919-20 when he joined Bristol Rovers for their first Football League season in the close season of 1920 after 60 appearances for The Mariners. However his time at Bristol Rovers was limited to a single season, he scored once in 12 appearances before the year end, and in 1921 he went to play football for Nainamo City in Canada.
