Description

Coatbridge, Lanarkshire born inside right Tommy Kiernan began his football career with Viewpark Celtic in 1935 and played for Clydebank Juniors from where he was signed by Albion Rovers in 1937, scoring 24 goals in 44 matches for The Wee Rovers before the outbreak of the Second World War. During the War he guested for a number of English clubs including Chelsea, Southampton, Brentford, Fulham, and Aldershot while serving with The Royal Engineers but after the War Celtic paid £4,000 to Albion Rovers for his services in July 1945, and his impressive displays for Celtic during the first post war season saw him win representative honours when he was selected for The Scottish League in a defeat to The Football League at Hampden Park in March 1947.

Described as “a clever ball worker and can shoot from all angles”, after 15 goals in 32 matches for Celtic he was sold to Stoke City for £8,500 in September 1947, making his Football League debut against Sheffield United a few days later, After playing just four matches at the start of 1948-49 Kiernan was then sold to Second Division club Luton Town in November 1948 for £6,000 having scored 7 goals in 30 matches for The Potters. With The Hatters Kiernan played three seasons scoring 15 goals in 60 matches before he returned to Scotland in December 1950 with St Mirren, where he scored once in 10 appearances before a move to Barry Town in June 1951. He returned to Albion Rovers in 1952 and scored 3 more goals in 33 further matches before joining Alloa Athletic in 1954, where in a final season he scored 8 goals in 29 matches before his retirement.
