Irvine, Ayrshire born right back Willie Kilmarnock began his football career with Irvine Meadow and Renfrew Juniors from where he signed for Scottish First Division club Motherwell in the summer of 1939, immediately before the outbreak of the Second World War. He had to wait until 1946 for his Scottish League debut but he had already played for Scotland in an unofficial wartime international against England at Wembley in 1944.
At Fir Park he became a stalwart, forming a famous full back partnership with Archie Shaw. He was capped by The Scottish League against The League of Ireland at Ibrox in September 1948, and captained the club as they brought the Scottish Cup back to Fir Park for the first time after a tremendous victory over Dundee in 1952.
Described at the time as “one of Motherwell’s grandest servants. Not the polished typer but stuffy and full of fight”, he scored 16 goals in 418 matches for Motherwell before joining Airdrieonians in 1956, playing a further 32 matches for Airdrie before his retirement in 1958.
