Born in Penistone, West Riding of Yorkshire, centre half Seth King began his football career with Penistone after the First World War. After a spell in Huddersfield Town’s reserves in 1919-20, he signed as a professional for Sheffield United, in November 1920 from Penistone Church for £10, for whom he made his Football League debut against Newcastle United in September 1922. Initially a fringe player, he came into The Blades’ first eleven on a more regular basis from September 1924, and was part of Sheffield United’s victorious 1925 FA Cup winning side that beat Cardiff City at Wembley Stadium.
King retained his place until October 1927 when the club signed Vince Matthews. King was sold to Oldham Athletic for £400 in May 1929 where he was an ever present for his first two seasons at Boundary Park, making 96 appearances before his contract was cancelled in February 1932 following an injury. Although intending to retire, King later spent some time playing as an amateur for Denaby United before finishing with football.
