Description

Fleetwood born full back William Lavery joined First Division Preston North End in 1906 from Fylde, making his debut against Bristol City in November 1906, and playing 15 matches that season. He didn’t play for Preston again until October 1908, and joined Southern League West Ham in 1909 after 23 appearances. He made his Hammers debut in December 1909 against Luton Town but only played 3 more times in 1909-10, before playing 15 games through to the year end, before transferring to Belfast Celtic in 1911.

He returned to England with Middlesbrough in 1913 but didn’t make a first team appearance, and joined Scottish League club Raith Rovers the same year. In April 1916 he played a single match for Heart of Midlothian and also returned to play for Belfast Celtic in 1918, before joining St Mirren in 1919. He finally returned to the Football League joining Port Vale in 1921, making 6 first team appearances in the year between December 1921 and 1922, joining non league Alkali Works the following year already aged 37.
