Basford born goalkeeper George Lawrence joined Second Division Derby County from Ilkeston United in 1910, making his debut against Blackpool that September. However he was predominantly an understudy to Ernie Scattergood during his first 3 seasons, establishing himself as first choice in 1914, playing 31 League games as Derby won the Second Division Championship in 1914-15. His career was interrupted by World War One, but on resumption he spent 3 seasons as Derby’s primary glovesman, before losing his place to Ben Olney in 1922. In the summer of 1924 he joined Bristol City after 145 appearances for The Rams, spending a season at Ashton Gate playing 14 times, before joining Lincoln City in 1925 for whom he made 7 appearances during 1925-26, before a return to non league Ilkeston United the following summer.
