Dumfries born goalkeeper William Lawrie signed for Celtic from Clydebank Juniors in October 1919 as cover for Celtic legend Charlie Shaw. He was “a lad of promise… full of enthusiasm, confident and hopeful… another excellent capture by Mr Maley.” He made his debut in place of the injured Shaw on 25th October 1919 in a 3-1 Scottish League win over Queen’s Park at Celtic Park. He would play the next two League matches a 2-1 win over Morton away and then finally a 1-1 draw at home to Falkirk, before the Shaw returned to the side fully fit. After that Lawrie was not to make another senior appearance and eventually left for Aberdeen in May 1921. He only made 2 appearances for Aberdeen during 1922-23 and joined Peterhead in September 1924.
