Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire born outside right Denis Lawson started his football career with Kilsyth Emmet in 1917 and played for Kilsyth Rangers in 1918, joining St Mirren in April 1919 . He scored 12 goals in 164 appearances for The Buddies and such was his form that he was capped for Scotland, playing in a 2-2 draw with England at Hampden Park in April 1923, which proved his only international appearance.
He was subsequently signed by First Division Cardiff City in November 1923, making his Football League debut against Manchester City the same month. He played 5 games in the earlier rounds of Cardiff’s 1925 FA Cup run that saw them beaten in the Final by Sheffield United, but he wasn’t selected for the Wembley match despite making over 30 appearances in the campaign.
He had three seasons at Ninian Park scoring twice in 77 appearances for The Bluebirds before moving to the nascent American Soccer Leagues and playing for Springfield Babes and Providence Clamdiggers in 1926. He returned to British football in October 1927 with a move to Wigan Borough, scoring twice in 29 appearances, and then finished his career back in Scotland joining Clyde in 1928 and then Brechin City in 1930 before his eventual retirement.
