Description

Bridport, Dorset born right half Bert Lee played junior football for Brewery Rovers in 1894-95 and Hamworthy St. Michael’s from 1895 to 1897 before joining Poole Town, from whom he signed for Southampton in the 1900 close season. He won the Southern League Championship in 1900-01 with The Saints, and was a member of their FA Cup Final team of 1902 that lost to Sheffield United in a replay at The Crystal Palace. He then won successive Southern League Championships with Southampton in 1903 and 1904. In February 1904 he won his only England cap when he was selected against Wales at The Racecourse Ground, Wrexham, in a match that finished as a 2-2 draw.

In 1906, after 8 goals in 174 appearances, Lee joined Dundee and captained them as they won the Scottish Cup with The Dees in 1910 when they beat Clyde 2-1 in the Final at Ibrox in a second replay. It is still the club’s only Scottish Cup success. Lee returned to Southampton in May 1911, and scored another 5 goals in 77 appearances at The Dell retiring with the advent of the First World War in 1915 and the suspension of peacetime football. Lee remained with Southampton as a trainer until 1935.
