Birmingham born centre forward or inside right Walter Leigh began his football career with Cadishead Amateurs before joining Aston Villa, for whom he made his Football League debut and only appearance at Everton in April 1899. He moved on to Cheshire League club Altrincham in 1899, from where he joined Second Division Grimsby Town in the summer of 1900. He scored 8 goals as The Mariners won the Second Division Championship in 1901 and had a season in the top flight with Grimsby although he lost his place in December and played only once more for them after New Year.
After 12 goals in 49 matches, Leigh moved to Second Division club Bristol City where he spent the 1902-03 season, and was a regular in their line up, scoring 7 goals in 33 matches, before spending two seasons at Southern League club New Brompton, from where he joined newly elected Second Division club Clapton Orient in the 1905 close season, playing in their inaugural League match at Leicester Fosse that September. After a single season he joined Kent League club Hastings & St Leonards but returned to Clapton Orient in 1907 for a further season, by when he had scored 15 goals in 47 matches for The O’s. He then joined non league Kettering in 1908, his last recorded club before his retirement.
