Description

Lehigh, Iowa (USA), born full back Hugh Lester started his football career with St Helens Recreation in 1910 and Earlestown the same year before joining Liverpool in December 1911 as an outside left. He became the first player born outside the British Isles to play for Liverpool when he made his Football League debut at Bradford City in April 1912, which the visitors won by two goals to nil. He was a noted amateur sprinter with a time of 10.5 seconds for the 100 yards. He only played twice for Liverpool’s first team as an outside left, his other appearance came the following season as part of the team that lost 4-1 at Sheffield United on 14th October 1912.

He joined Oldham Athletic in May 1913 and it was when at Oldham that he was moved to full back, although he only made one League appearance for The Latics, at Notts County in January 1915. He utilised his speed to go up-field but his final touch on the ball was said to lack “heartiness”. After the First World War he joined Southern League Reading in 1919, staying only a season before joining non league Hurst in 1920. Lester later returned to the USA in the 1920’s.
