Description

Murton, County Durham born wing half George Liddell had joined North Eastern League South Shields from Yorkshire Amateurs in 1915, but after World War One he joined Second Division Birmingham City, making his Football League debut at his former club South Shields (in Shields’ inaugural Football League fixture) in August 1920. Although he only played twice in his maiden League season, which saw Birmingham promoted, he played a further 11 seasons for Birmingham, and from 1924 was virtually ever present. He was part of the 1931 FA Cup Final team that went to Wembley losing 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion and retired from playing in the summer of 1932, having scored 6 goals in 345 appearances. He subsequently was appointed manager of Birmingham from July 1933 to September 1939, leaving after 3 matches of the 1939-40 season (subsequently expunged from official records) when peacetime football was suspended after the declaration of World War Two.
