Stockton, County Durham born right back Billy Lindsay began his football career with Stockton St John’s in 1890 and played for Stockton in 1892, from where he joined First Division club Everton in 1893, making his Football League debut at Sheffield Wednesday that November. He played 9 matches for Everton before a move to Second Division Grimsby Town in May 1894, where he was an ever present during 1894-95 and a regular for four seasons, scoring once in 120 matches for The Mariners.
He joined Newcastle United in February 1898 and played in 9 matches including two Test matches as Newcastle gained their first promotion to the top flight with victories over Stoke and Blackburn Rovers in the Test matches. He was then a regular for their first two seasons in the First Division, and by the time he joined Southern League club Luton Town in 1900 he had scored once in 60 matches for The Toon. He had three seasons at Luton Town then joined Watford in 1903 where he played 59 matches over the next three seasons before returning to Luton Town in 1906 for a season, He finally joined non league Hitchin Town in 1907, his final club before his retirement.
Lindsay’s younger brother, Jimmy, was also a footballer who played for Bury against Derby County in the 1903 FA Cup Final; Bury won 6-0.
