Retford, Nottinghamshire born left winger Edward Linley began his football career with Midland League club Worksop Town signing for them in the 1919 close season soon after the end of the First World War, from where he joined Second Division Birmingham in December 1920, making his Football League debut at Stockport County in January 1921. He scored twice in 12 matches as Birmingham won the Second Division Championship at the season end, and while never a regular he made frequent first team appearances over the next five First Division seasons, averaging around 20 games a season.
He scored in total 11 goals in 118 appearances for The Blues before joining Nottingham Forest in the summer of 1926. His single season at The City Ground saw 5 goals in 31 appearances for Forest, before he joined Midland League club Sutton Town in 1927. He then joined Mansfield Town in February 1928, scoring once in 6 appearances for The Stags and joined Shirebrook in 1929 before his eventual retirement.
