Description

Anderston, Glasgow born centre half Matty Lochhead started his football career with Beith Hibernians in 1905 and joined Scottish League club St Mirren a year later, making 12 appearances for The Buddies. In May 1908 he signed for Southern League club Swindon Town and made 9 appearances for The Robins before joining Manchester City in May 1909. However he failed to break into the City first team and returned to Scotland with Beith Athletic in 1910.

He re-joined Swindon Town in 1911 and played for them both sides of the First World War, scoring once in 34 appearances over three seasons, winning the Southern League Championship with them in 1913-14, when he made 15 League appearances. During the War he served in The Royal Scots Fusiliers. During the War he also played for Heart of Midlothian between October 1917 and December 1918, scoring twice in 35 matches for The Jambos, and for Clyde in 1919, where he played 7 matches.

Having returned to Swindon Town after the resumption of peacetime football in 1919 when he scored his only goal for Swindon in 18 further matches across 1919-20, taking his total appearances for The Robins to 65. He then joined non league Bath City in 1920 but in May 1921 he joined his first Football League club when he signed for Third Division (South) club Reading, making his Football League debut that September at Northampton Town. But he was a fringe player at Elm Park managing only 7 first team appearances over two seasons before returning to Bath City in 1923, his last club before his eventual retirement.
