Description

Exeter, Devon born left back Wilf Lowton played for Heavitree United in 1923 before joining hometown Third Division (South) club Exeter City in September 1925, for whom he made his Football League debut against Queen’s Park Rangers the same month in a 3-0 home win, Lowton scoring from the penalty spot. It wasn’t until the 1928 that he won a regular first team place, and showed the sort of form that prompted Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign him at the end of the campaign for a fee of £1,400 after 9 goals in 75 appearances for The Grecians.

He was made captain of Wolves in 1931, helping them to win the Second Division Championship in 1931-32, and had two further seasons as a regular in the top flight, before losing his place at the start of the 1934-35 season, after when he only played 4 further matches. Having made 209 appearances in the old gold and black, scoring 27 goals, of which 18 were penalties, he was released and returned to Exeter City in the 1935 close season, already aged 35, and played out the remainder of his career making a further 18 appearances for them before his playing retirement.

He was appointed as The Grecians’ assistant trainer in August 1936, but left that position four months later. After the Second World War he was appointed manager of Exmouth United in September 1947.
