Description

A winger who played both sides and also regularly featured at inside left, Esh Winning, County Durham born Charlie Luke began his football career with Esh Winning Juniors in the mid 1920’s, playing for Ushaw Moor and Tow Law Town before an unsuccessful trial with Portsmouth in 1927 led him to sign for Third Division (North) club Darlington in 1928-29, where he made his Football League debut against Halifax Town in April 1929, playing twice for The Quakers that month before returning to non league football with Esh Winning later in 1929 and Bishop Auckland in 1930.

First Division club Huddersfield Town signed him in 1931 and he made his debut for The Terriers that December, becoming a regular from October 1932. He was an ever present scoring 19 goals as Huddersfield Town finished runners up in the League Championship in 1933-34 operating mainly at inside left, and by the time he signed for Sheffield Wednesday in February 1936 he had scored 48 goals in 143 matches for The Terriers.

Never assured of a place at Hillsborough, he played half their matches as they were relegated in 1936-37, and joined Second Division club Blackburn Rovers in February 1938 after 8 goals in 43 matches for Wednesday, playing 10 matches for Rovers before the season end in which he scored twice, but didn’t feature the following season. He joined Chesterfield early in 1939, and his career was effectively bought to an end by the outbreak of the Second World War that September, by when he had scored 4 goals in 13 matches for The Spireites. After the War he played for Whitstable Town in 1945 before his eventual retirement.
